for Education,
he was the Rector of Aden University. His predecessor,
Mr.

was appointed as Minister of Communication.

Today, June 13,2001 the Steering Committee of the Basic
Education
Expansion Project held a meeting to discuss the new
schools construction
programin the firstyear of the
project, the
work plan of the second year, criteria of
district selection and difficulties
facing the Project implementation and ways to
overcome them.

Today, July 22,2001 the Steering Committee of the Basic
Education Expansion Project held a meeting to discuss and approve
the targeted districts for the Project in the coming years, and
the expansion of the Project activities which will include new
districts.

Today, October 16,2001 Prof. Abdulaziz Saleh Ben Hebtour,
MOE Vice Minister attended the signature ceremony of the technical
assistance between the Ministry of Education represented by the
Basic Education Expansion Project and GTZ, the contract is worth
US $ 194,120 in which the GTZ will establish a community
participation unit (CPU) within the MOE including formalizing CPU
function, designing, planning, assessment, and implementation of
community participation activities. The contract was signed by Dr.
Abdullatif Almaneefi, Project Director representing the Ministry
of Education and Dr. Helmut Grosskreutz, Director of the GTZ
Office in Sana’a.
5- Today,
January 14,2002, the Steering Committee of the Basic Education
Expansion Project held a meeting to discuss the work plan and
budget of the project for the
second year 2002, the site selection
criteria for new schools and schools lists for
2002 which will be
constructed in the four Project’s Governorates, The SC also
discussed the selection criteria for school rehabilitation and
extension program, the
disbursement mechanism which will be
adopted in the second year of the project
since the project will
expand to cover four governorates, The SC members also
discussed
the role of the Central Implementation Team (CIT) within the
project.

Today February 26, 2001 the Project Launch Workshop for
the Basic Education Expansion Project is taking place at
Sheratoon Sana’a. Dr. Abdullatif Almaneefi, Project
Director, declared that the workshop will run for three days,
and that more than 100 persons from the Project four
governorates: Sana’a Amran, Al-Mahweet and Al Dhalea, will
participate in addition to the Ministry of Education staff
working in the project implementation.
The
opening ceremony is held under the patronage of H.E. Prime
Minister, Dr. Abdulkarim Al-Iryani, and attended by Ministers,
members of the Parliament and Consultative Council,
ambassadors of donors’ countries, international
organizations representatives and agencies working in the
education sector. Dr. Almaneefi added that this workshop aims
to discuss the status of education in general and basic
education in particular, government policies, and strategies
and the role of the project in supporting the ministry
strategies.
The
workshop will include a number of papers and panel discussions
on the project components and implementation, the papers will
be presented by the Ministry of education staff,
implementation teams, project management as well as the World
Bank which is the main financier of the project.
Dr.
Almaneefi pointed out that the project implementation has been
decentralized and carried out by Education Offices in
governorates and districts, following the new policies of
decentralization and local administration in the country.

Furniture
for Project’s Schools |
1.Today, November 12,2001, contracts are being signed with
several contractors to supply, transport and install furniture for
the Project’s schools in Sana’a governorate.

several contractors to supply, transport and distribute
educational kits for the Project’s schools in Sana’a
Governorate.

Today December 29,2001, contracts are signed with several
contractors to carry out the civil works for rehabilitation and
expansion of the Project’s schools in Billad Alros, Nehm, Safaan,
and Alhyma Alkharjeah districts, Sana’a Governorate.
Around 9
schools will be rehabilitated and two will be extended in the four
districts in Sana’a Governorate

Training
for MOE and CAU Staff

Today, January 28,2002, the GTZ in collaboration
with the Basic Education Expansion Project organized a workshop on
the community participation activities and functions, the workshop
was attended by community participation representatives from the
four project’s governorates.

Today, February 9, 2002, the Basic Education Expansion
Project held a workshop on school mapping for the representative
of 28 districts in Amran and Aldhale governorates, the workshop
will run for five days, it aims to assess the expertise of
national staff on the procedures of implementing logical school
mapping for the school construction program under the project as
well as raise their knowledge in this topic.

Today, February 16, 2002, the Basic Education Expansion
Project held a workshop on school mapping for the representative
of 28 districts in Sana’a and Almahweet governorates, the
workshop will run for five days, it aims to assess the expertise
of national staff on the procedures of implementing logical school
mapping for the school construction program under the project as
well as raise their knowledge in this topic.

Today, June 13, 2001, in the presence of H.E. the
Minister and Vice Minister of MOE, the Steering Committee for
the Basic Education Expansion Project held its second meeting
to discuss the achieved progress in implementing the Project
Year 2001 workplan and the preparation for Year 2002.
Today June 10, 2001, H.E. the Minister of Education
held a meeting with donors representatives to discuss the
ongoing work on Yemen Basic Education Strategy. The meeting
organized by the World Bank, UNICEF and hosted by the
Netherlands Embassy in Sana’a. The minister delivered speech
pointing out the Ministry vision and efforts before and after
Dakar Forum 2000.
Today, May 26, 2001, H.E Dr. Fadhl Abu Ghanim Minister
of Education met Dr. Mahmoud Ayoub, Regional Director of the
World Bank. During the meeting they discussed aspects of
collaboration between MOE and the World Bank specially in
projects financed by the WB including schools constructions
and maintenance, curriculum development, schools mapping,
improving teachers and inspectors performance and continuing
the financial and administrative reform in the education
sector as well as promoting girls enrolment in education and
investments in the education sector.
Mr.
Giani Brizzi, Director of the World Bank Office, Sana’a, Mr.
Ousmane Diagana, Sr. Officer for Health & Education
Projects in Yemen, and Dr. Abdullatif Almaneefi, Director of
the Basic Education Expansion Project attended the
meeting.
